A hot day in the arena

This was the year of the Hop-Pole Summer. The year the pride of a nation rested upon the thin shoulders of a young man in a red baseball cap. A young man who wore glasses, and was given to leaning against things. A young man by the name of: Harry Hop-Pole.

‘HOP-POLE! HOP-POLE! HOP-POLE!’

Harry glanced up. The stands were a mass of waving flags. All around the entire stadium people were on their feet. He waved back and the crowd went into a frenzy.

‘HOP-POLE! HOP-POLE! HOP-POLE!’

Then he hefted his pole and walked out into the glare of the arena. He had come to jump.
