The Dreaded Uprights

Down in the arena, stood a lone figure with a pole.

On televisions sets all round the world the same images were being seen. In the middle of the night in some places. An insomniac in Melbourne yawned and switched channels.

Five miles away, on the top floors of a tower block, people with their windows open could hear the sounds of distant cheering.

Then suddenly all went silent.

Hop-Pole raised his English Yew Pole and tapped it a couple of times on the ground, adjusting his grip slightly around the shaft. Then he picked it up and ran.
